Life of Luxury: ICONS 2017

In 2015, the Driven by Disruption auction stunned collectors by fetching 73.5 million for 31 of the world's most exclusive cars. Two years later, New York City is once again the epicenter of RM Sotheby's Life of Luxury ICONS auction and presents a wide selection of truly iconic automobiles to the public.

Oozing with the tranquility and sophistication of a fine-arts gallery, ICONS 2017 welcomed prospective buyers, art lovers and car enthousiasts to admire 31 iconic automobiles as part of RM Sotheby's Life of Luxury sales event this December. From the dazzling Weissach wrapped Porsche 918 Spyder in Martini livery to Phill Hill's winning Jaguar C-type or the rally favored Lancia Delta Integrale; and estimates ranging from $150,000 to $17 million, there was something to be had for everyone's purse.

For those preferring some added comfort and modern technology, top-of-the-line sports cars such as the first ever to be autioned off 2018 Bugatti Chiron or a 2014 Pagani Huayra presented nicely on the floor; however, if the 70's and 80's were more your cup of tea, retro-wave style Miami Vice lovers could see themselves driving the white 25th anniversary 1989 Lamborghini Countach or Ferrari Testarossa, which estimated at around $250,000 each.

Next to Steve Job's 2000 BMW Z8, complete with original BMW Motorola cell phone, stood a stunningly restored 1960 VW Deluxe '23-Window' Microbus in orange and beige two-tone. Featured with two folding chairs, one can imagine driving it around Hawaii in search for the next big wave and admiring this magnificent 40hp type 241, while sipping a cocktail on the beach.

Star of the evening was the legendary Ferrari 250GT Club Calofornia Spider Competizione. The second of only eight aluminium bodied California Spider earned a platinum award at the 2011 Cavallino Classic and hammered off at at 16,350,000 million, resulting in a staggering final price of 17,900,000 million dollars. Although at times bidding was slow, with a nearly full auction room, interest was still there for the ICONS auction, with many items meeting or lightly exceeding estimates. This certainly was no repeat of the Driven by Disruption, but New York showed once again that it is able to demand attention, although that might not be a surprise for a city that never sleeps.
